Re: Quick Contest 12 [COMPLETE]
The origin of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris and sometimes referred to as Canis familiaris) began with the domestication of the wolf tens of thousands of years ago.[1][2][3] Genetic and archaeological evidence shows that humans domesticated wolves on more than one occasion, with the present lineage of C. l. familiaris arising at the latest 15,000 years ago as evidenced by the Bonn-Oberkassel site and possibly as early as 33,000 years ago as evidenced by the mtDNA testing on a paleolithic dog's remains from the Razboinichya Cave (Altai Mountains).[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Some research indicates that dogs may have diverged over 100,000 years ago.

The first theory was that early man was the one to domisticate the wild wolf and perhaps became pets which evolved over times into other species which we call dogs.

This describes when and where the wolf was domesticated, but does not list how they evolved into dogs. Keep guessing though!

Yes. That is the first and most commonly accepted theory. To go more into detail. This theory describes that it was man to first domesticate the wolf. It is said that early humans actually took wolf pups from the mothers den, and raised them to become domestic companions. However, this theory is becoming quickly proved wrong by new scientific research. For example: Wolves can not simply be..."raised" by humans, research shows. Even the wolf-dog hybrids of today often have extreme behavioral issues due to the conflicting nature of a wild wolf and domesticated companion. Also...how did the early humans have the necessary nutrition for a wolf pup? They did not have the proper milk supplements. It is not like they could just go to the grocery store to buy wolf formula!
Anyways. There is ONE other theory I will accept. A theory that is becoming more popular as science advances.

Re: Quick Contest 12 [COMPLETE]
Isn't the second theory have to do with man forming villages and spreading quickly in the wolf territories that wolves had to scavenge for food. Like how a dog would search for scraps and come back for more? I may be wrong. ^.^ But thought i would give it a shot

That is actually correct! It is believed that wolves began to slowly domesticate at the time when humans started building permanent settlements. These settlements in turn had their own array of waste and garbage-- attracting animals such as the wolf for easy feedings. Some wolves had an advantage over others, and that was due to "flight distance". Wolves with the shortest flight distance, or wolves that had little fear of humans, always had the first pickings on food. On the other hand, wolves with the longest flight distance would run as soon as they spotted a human, not getting a chance at the scraps. Over the course of as little as ten years, the wolves with he shortest flight distance began an evolutionary change-- cutting them off from the wild wolf. Having no need to hunt large animals or use as much brain power for communicating, the teeth shortened, and their brain grew smaller in size. The muzzle became broader, and the wolves shortened as much to 1/3rd of their original size. These "wolves" would eventually lead to the modern dog we know today.
This is just what I was taught in school. I'm sure there are many different theories out there!
